I was amazed at how easy it was to use an AppDomain! It wasn t until some weeks later that I found that, while the Suspect assembly was unloaded with the Sandbox domain, the Sandbox.Load call was also loading the library into the default AppDomain and unloading a secondary domain has no effect on the default domain. Judging from various online venues, this seems to be a common mistake. While the AppDomain.Load documentation specifically warns about the dangers of this, the warning can be impossible to understand without some remoting background. The Assembly class is serializable but not remotable. The Sandbox.Load call does indeed load an assembly into the new AppDomain, but deserializing the returned Assembly also loads the assembly into the original domain. (As per the SDK documentation, this can cause assembly mismatch issues if the two domains have different assembly search paths.) Doing anything like creating instances of types defined in the Suspect assembly only increases the pollution of the original AppDomain if the types from the Suspect refer to any assemblies that aren t already loaded into the original AppDomain.
